Banyana Banyana played their first match in the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup game on Saturday, but were defeated 3-1 by team Spain.
Some stunning moments by the South Africans included some amazing saves by goalkeeper Andile Dlaminia and a spectacular goal by Thembi Kgatlana in the 24th minute which put them in the lead.
The first-ever goal at the #FIFAWWC for #BanyanaBanyana was a sublime finish by @Kgatlanathe1st!
An early contender for @Hyundai_Global #GoaloftheTournament?

Spain equalized in the second half when they were awarded a penalty due to Captain Janine van Wyk handling the ball in the box.
Defender Nothando Vilakazi earned herself a red card following a tackling gone wrong in the box, which resulted in Spain being awarded another goal-yielding penalty in the 80th minute.
Spain’s last goal came just minutes before the final whistle was blown.
Banyana Banyana’s next Group B match will be against China on Thursday. Maybe that will be the game that shifts the national team up from last place in the group.
