On November 2, Greenpoint Park was alive with joy as 39 children from Tambo Village, Mannenberg, and the SA Kinderhuis enjoyed a Fun Day, made possible by the support of Wings of Support, LED Lighting SA, Converge Consulting, and Harfield Harriers. Thanks to Golden Arrow, the children were transported to the park for a day filled with laughter and connection.
The SA Kinderhuis, the first welfare institution in South Africa, plays a vital role in caring for 44 children. The event brought together 70 participants, including volunteers from LED Lighting and Harfield Harriers, creating a magical atmosphere for the children.
Among the volunteers were 10 Community Youth Play Ambassadors and one Parent Play Ambassador, all aged 15 to 26, from communities like Tambo Village and Gugulethu. These ambassadors have completed a training program that builds resilience and coping skills, empowering them to be positive role models. Through play, they learn to approach challenges with a growth mindset and foster essential qualities like perseverance and adaptability.
Parent Play Ambassador Lerato shared her journey, expressing gratitude for the program’s support. “I started nervous, but with the help of this program, I’ve developed new skills and confidence,” she said. “I encourage everyone to take advantage of what’s available and to connect with others on their own journey.”
The Fun Day allowed the children to engage in games that fostered curiosity and connection. They enjoyed flying kites under the sunny Cape Town sky, highlighting the importance of multi-age and intergenerational play. This event exemplified how community collaboration can enrich the lives of children, providing them with valuable experiences and skills that will shape their futures.
