Even in the midst of darkness, South Africans unite

South Africa has gone through much unrest in the last few days since the arrest of former president Jacob Zuma, however many citizens refuse to stand by and look on as businesses fall apart and instead have spoken up for their communities.

Former President Jacob Zuma was arrested on the 8th of July following contempt of court charges by the state, an offense that is not taken lightly by the constitutional court. This has resulted in him being sentenced to 15 months in prison.

Many of his supporters in his home province (KwaZulu Natal), unhappy with the decision by the state, protested through the looting of malls and other establishments in the area. The unrest spread across the province to Gauteng.

To date, several malls, private establishments, and even dealerships have been looted adding to an already strained economy in the wake of the pandemic.

However, through it all many South Africans have mobilised to help rebuild and protect their communities from the events that took place earlier this week.

Taxi associations have used their voices to make it know that they shall help protect infrastructure and businesses that have helped put food on the table for their families. Many even used their taxis as barricades to protect buildings.

Community members have also shared on social media that they are willing to clean up their malls and even help businesses rebuild. Organisations such as IKAG Volunteers and Gift of the Givers have also offered a helping hand to rebuild the communities that have been most affected by the unrest.

Even amidst such trying times, South Africans are determined to work together for the greater good of the people who need the help the most. Acting on the South African motto “diverse people unite”.
