On 4 June, the Save7 organisation proudly launched the LifePod, South Africa’s first student-driven Intensive Care Unit dedicated to optimizing the viability of donated organs prior to transplantation. This pioneering initiative funded through student-led fundraising initiatives and co-funding from The Health Foundation (THF), represents groundbreaking advancement in organ donation and transplant management.

Held at the Biomedical Research Institute, Tygerberg Campus, the launch event brought together esteemed healthcare professionals, policymakers, student leaders, and key stakeholders to celebrate this transformative step in donor management. The event featured distinguished speakers from Save7, Stellenbosch University, Tygerberg Hospital and The Health Foundation, who highlighted the collaborative effort and dedication that brought this vital project to life. Tanya Bothma brought it all home by sharing her personal account of receiving a double lung transplant and the far-reaching impact of long waiting lists on organ recipients and their loved ones.

Attendees explored the state-of-the-art LifePod facility through guided tours, gaining insight into its advanced medical technology and innovative protocols designed to maximise donor organ viability. The initiative received widespread praise, with many recognising its potential to set new national benchmarks in donor care and patient outcomes.

Mr. Harry Grainger, CEO of The Health Foundation, expressed his enthusiasm for supporting this student-led initiative. “We welcome the opportunity to support these young students on a remarkable endeavour and encourage donors and supporters to get involved in this meaningful cause,” he stated.

The successful launch of the LifePod not only establishes Save7 as a leader in student-driven healthcare innovation but also marks a significant step forward in ensuring the sustainability and effectiveness of organ transplantation programs across South Africa.
