South African National Defence Force (SANDF) soldiers arrived to officially begin operations in gang-infested Cape Flats areas on Thursday after Police Minister Bheki Cele vowed that the army would be deployed last week.

The troops were well-received by the residents of Manenberg and Hanover Park as they watched their new protectors patrolled their neighbourhoods.

The army will aid the South African Police Services with ensuring the public’s adherence to by-laws indefinitely.

Minister Cele pinpointed 10 main areas in need of assistance from the army. Among the 10 were Mitchells Plain, Bishop Lavis, and Nyanga.

Zorah Matasi from the Vroue van Aksie organisation in Strand shares her views on the deployment.
