Namibia has been engulfed in a wave of grief and reflection following the recent passing of President Hage Gottfried Geingob. Throughout his life, the late president committed himself to the service of the Namibian people, leaving an enduring imprint on the hearts of citizens nationwide.
On Friday 23 February 2024, a poignant street march was organized in Windhoek to honor the memory of President Geingob. Thousands of Namibians took to the streets, carrying banners, signs, portraits and art expressing their gratitude for the late leader’s tireless efforts to advance the nation. The anticipated turnout was substantial, yet the actual number of attendees surpassed all expectations.
The atmosphere during the march was solemn and reverent as Namibians from all walks of life mourned their beloved leader. Their grief has been evident throughout the country’s streets and offices. From memorial tables in every workplace to various responses from businesses and NGOs, the entire social sphere, and media outlets are united in paying tribute. They fondly remembered the president’s lively interactions with the people and his memorable dance moves, reflecting on his vibrant presence in the nation’s collective memory.
Memorial services were conducted all over the country in the previous week. SWAPO, the ruling party, hosted the most recent wake which was attended by government officials and everyday citizens. As the sun set over the city, a sea of candles illuminated the faces of those gathered to pay their respects while others participated online. The atmosphere was one of solemn reflection, as speakers took to the stage to share memories and stories of the late president, some from opposition parties.
Throughout the evening, songs of remembrance and unity filled the air, echoing the sentiment of solidarity that President Geingob had instilled in the nation. As the candles flickered in the darkness, it was clear that his spirit lived on in the hearts of all those present.
In a memorial at the Casa Rosalia, family and friends remembered his warm, soft, and loving side. His eldest son, Mangaliso Geingob, remarked, “My father had a vision for the future and it was not just his vision, but it was your vision because he listened to every one of you.”

One speaker, a longtime friend and personal bodyguard of President Geingob, shared heartfelt anecdotes about their time together.
“President Geingob was not just a leader, he was a friend to all who knew him. His kindness and compassion touched the lives of so many, we will remember this gentle giant,” he said emotively before concluding with a touching song.
