On a heartwarming display of community spirit and athleticism, the Mobile Telecommunications Limited (MTC) Runners Connect event took place on March 15, 2025, at Dr. Antonio Agostinho Neto Square in Ausspannplatz, Windhoek. More than just a race, it was a celebration of perseverance,
health, and the power of coming together for a greater purpose.
Runners of all ages and fitness levels gathered, ready to challenge themselves in distances
of 5 km, 10 km, or the gruelling 21 km half-marathon. The energy in the air was electric,
laughter, encouragement, and the sound of pounding footsteps and if you listened closer,
heartbeats too, filled the streets as participants set off on their respective journeys.
Beyond personal achievements, the event had a greater mission. All proceeds were directed
to the Namibia National Children’s Hearts Trust, ensuring children born with congenital heart
diseases receive the medical care they need, regardless of their socio-economic status. Dr.
Fenny Shidhika, founder of the trust, emphasized the dual benefit of the initiative, stating,
“The best part about this fundraising is that it has a double effect; it does not only support
those with heart diseases, but it also keeps the runners in shape, therefore making it
beneficial to both the receiver and donor.”
MTC’s corporate affairs manager, John Ekongo, reinforced the company’s commitment to
wellness and community upliftment, encouraging more people to participate and prioritize
their well-being. The event also served as a qualifier for the esteemed Two Oceans
Marathon in South Africa, adding an extra layer of motivation for those aiming to compete on
an international stage. Early registrants were rewarded with T-shirts, swag bags, and
recovery boot vouchers, making participation even more exciting.
For the runners, the journey to the finish line was filled with triumphs and challenges. One
participant reflected, “I signed up for the MTC run because of my love for running and the
desire to challenge myself. It felt like a great opportunity to test my endurance and enjoy the
camaraderie of fellow runners.”
There were moments of struggle, but perseverance won the day. “The most challenging part
for me was dealing with a ‘runner’s tummy.’ It was uncomfortable, but I focused on my
breathing and kept reminding myself that I had trained for this. I just kept putting one foot in
front of the other.” The highlight for many wasn’t just the finish line but the overwhelming support along the way.
“My favourite moment was when I passed by cars cheering us on. Their enthusiasm was
infectious and gave me a surprising burst of energy just when I needed it!”
Crossing the finish line was an emotional moment for all. “It felt exhilarating! It was a mix of
relief and joy. I had imagined this moment for a while, and receiving my medal made all the
effort worth it.”
As the sun rose over Windhoek that Saturday, it illuminated not just the runners’ paths but
the hearts of a community united in purpose. The MTC Runners Connect event wasn’t just
about running, it was about pushing limits, lifting others, and proving that together, we can
make a difference.
Whether through running, volunteering, or supporting charitable causes, every effort counts.
Let this event serve as a beacon of inspiration for all to embrace wellness and extend a
helping hand to those in need. The spirit of MTC Runners Connect will continue to fuel
change, one step at a time.
