Over 300 under-17 soccer players from 16 schools across Cape Town gathered at the Salberau Sport Field in Elsies River for the inaugural Hope Cup, held from Heritage Day to September 27. This exciting event showcased the city’s young talent, teamwork, and community spirit.
The tournament, supported by the South African Football Association Cape Town (SAFA-CT), brought together schools from Bishop Lavis to Atlantis. Craig Walters, a former youth footballer from Leonsdale, spearheaded the initiative, which aimed to keep learners engaged during school holidays and provide exposure to tertiary institutions scouting young talent.
Local Ward Councillor Alderman Christopher Jordaan collaborated with Walters to secure support from the City’s Recreation and Parks Department and ward allocation. The event drew enthusiastic crowds from surrounding communities, with friends, family, and residents cheering on the players.
St. Andrews High School emerged victorious, defeating Excelsior High School 4-3 on penalties after a goalless draw. Masibambisani High School won the Plate Section, beating President High School 5-4 on penalties.
Top performers included:
- Sanco Olkers (Valhalla High): Player of the Tournament
- Duante Jones (St. Andrews): Goalkeeper of the Tournament
- Zendine Koopman (Excelsior High) and Damon Klein (Elsies River High): Joint Top Goalscorers with five goals each
“The Hope Cup symbolizes what’s possible when communities unite for our youth,” said Alderman Christopher Jordaan. “Sport steers young people toward positive paths, and we’re proud to support initiatives creating opportunities for future generations.”
Councillor Patricia Van der Ross, Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, added, “This tournament promotes physical activity, strengthens community bonds, and gives us hope for a brighter future.”
With continued support from the City, SAFA-CT, and local stakeholders, the Hope Cup will remain a beacon of opportunity and hope, uniting communities and empowering Cape Town’s youth.
