Community Champions Honoured at Annual Mama Afrika Summit

The Diaz Hotel in Mossel Bay recently hosted the annual Clover Mama Afrika Awards Summit, a heartfelt celebration of the inspiring women known as the Mama Afrikas. These remarkable community leaders were recognised for their dedication, growth, and tireless efforts to uplift those around them.

Mama Selistien Moses from Ashbury, Western Cape, walked away with the Best Business Award for her work at the Khayalethu Care Centre, which she founded to support children in need. Today, the centre cares for over 300 children and 80 elderly people. She is also running successful small businesses in bread baking, flower arranging and food gardening.

The Special Recognition Award went to Mama Nolitha Ndalasi from Khayelitsha, along with the Social Media Overlord Award. With 15 years of experience in local government, Mama Nolitha now runs the Sinethemba Community Organisation, which supports vulnerable groups through food gardens, kitchens for HIV and AIDS patients, and educational programmes.

Mama Rina Malan from Pretoria was named Entrepreneur of the Year for her incredible work with children placed in her care through Social Services. Her projects range from food gardening to mosaicking and beadwork, all rooted in her desire to give back.

Mama Gail Koeberg from Magaliessig received the Best Sewing Star Award, and Best Mosaic Star went to Mama Felicity Maluleke, the youngest Mama, known for her creativity and commitment.

Several Mamas were also named Clover Mama Afrika Ambassadors for 2025, including Mama Sipiwe Solomons, recognised for her work in health and community care.

Professor Elain Vlok summed it up best: “Together we have taught each other, we have accepted each other, we have shared, laughed together and loved one another.”

This year’s theme, “Deeply rooted in strength, united in sisterhood,” could not have been more fitting.
