South Africans woke up to news of Bathabile Dlamini’s resignation with immediate effect as Member of Parliament (MP) and ANC Women’s League on Tuesday. Another letter of resignation was submitted a few hours later from former Minister of Tourism, Derek Hanekom.

A total of eight MPs have resigned since President Cyril Ramaphosa made some changes to his cabinet. Some of the new MPs who will replace them have already been sworn in.

The ruling party lost Jeff Radebe, Nomaindia Mfeketo, Susan Shabangu, Thokozile Xasa, Dipuo Letsatsi-Duba and Siyabonga Cwele. What they have in common is not having made it onto Ramaphosa’s shrunken cabinet.

The last ANC MP left standing after being removed as a Cabinet minister is Mildred Oliphant.
