The South African Editors Forum (SANEF) stood behind veteran journalist, Karima Brown who in the last 24 hours had been under attack.
On Tuesday night, Brown mistakenly posted a message in the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) media statement group on WhatsApp that she later said she had intended to send to a journalist group.
Although she deleted the message soon after, it was already too late. EFF leader, Julius Malema, had seen it. He then shared a screenshot of the incident on Twitter, however Brown’s cell phone number was visible.
This was what lead to the start of the attack on her. Insults and threats were sent to her by people who are assumed to be EFF supporters.
SANEF called on the EFF leadership to put an end to the intimidation of journalists, particularly women in media, especially since the EFF had shown support of Bongekile “Babes Wodumo” Simelane on Tuesday.
