Crime and gangsterism-rife hotspots on the Cape Flats in Cape Town await the arrival of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF).
Police Minister announced their impending deployment in his budget speech in parliament on Thursday. He accredited Defence Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula for requesting the authorisation of the deployment from President Cyril Ramaphosa.
SANDF’s role will be one that will deal with the high crime rate in those areas. Violence has been on the rise in recent weeks, especially with the fatal shootings of 11 people in Philippi last weekend.
The announcement was met with mixed emotions by the residents:
Community leaders in the area have asked for the SANDF to be deployed. This current situation seems to be worse than normal after 13 people were killed in Philippi East over two days. https://t.co/RPV4jdDP4Yhttps://t.co/SH2dZQx6W5 pic.twitter.com/TCtakyLsXb

Since the SANDF were deployed to crime-riddled communities in Cape Town, I hope they will also deploy them to Sunnyside, Hillbrow and Kempton Park. pic.twitter.com/rLBegGAUKX
