As we look ahead to 2025 with optimism and determination, it’s impossible to ignore the historic and transformative milestone Namibia achieved just a few months ago – the election of Dr Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah as the nation’s first female president. This momentous event not only ushers in a new era of leadership but also inspires a collective sense of purpose and possibility for the year ahead. Just as individuals are setting their personal resolutions, President Nandi-Ndaitwah’s leadership offers a renewed vision for Namibia, promising progress and inclusivity for all.

In November 2024, Namibia made history by electing its first female president, a moment that has since become a source of national pride and inspiration. This milestone, however, is more than just a historic event – it represents a transformative step toward inclusive leadership and a non-gendered future with broad horizons.

The new president’s leadership signals a shift not only for women but for all Namibians who dream of breaking barriers. Venessa, a Namibian mother and student, expressed her excitement about this achievement. “We’re happy for the female president. After all, her investment in the youth is much needed,” she said.

Venessa, like many others, is also forward-looking. She hopes to see the president focus on issues that resonate deeply with her, particularly the care and support of children with disabilities. “We need to cater for children with autism, ADHD, and Down Syndrome, especially in rural and less fortunate areas,” she emphasised, sharing her personal experience as a mother of an autistic child.

The new president’s leadership style is expected to bring a unique perspective to Namibia’s presidency. Venessa believes women’s inherent strength and resilience will shine through, saying, “Women are strong, and we trust her to make a difference, especially for the youth.”

This historic election has already sparked hope for future generations, particularly women who now see that leadership roles are within their reach. “She didn’t let her age or criticism stop her,” Venessa noted, underscoring the courage it takes to pursue leadership against the odds. Her term in office is unprecedented in many ways, and the rest of the nation hopes that it yields unprecedented results for the people of Namibia – the land of the brave.
