This week on The Taste Master Junior, the bottom six contestants faced an intense elimination challenge that tested their precision, patience, and pastry skills. Their mission was to craft the ultimate “garage pie,” a handheld savoury creation that could rival South Africa’s favourite grab-and-go treat.
Guest judge and content creator Nicholas Fraser guided the young chefs through the art of pie-making, covering everything from flaky, golden crusts to rich, flavour-packed fillings. Every detail counted as the contestants battled to stay in the competition.
For Sarah Flowers and Joy Nxumalo, the challenge proved too tough, marking the end of their journeys on the show. Joy attempted a lamb, spinach, mushroom, and cheese pie, aiming for a hearty and sophisticated flavour, but it was undercooked, costing her crucial points. Sarah went for a lasagne-inspired pie, layering mince and béchamel sauce. While the idea impressed the judges, the execution fell short, needing more sauce and layers to fully bring the dish to life.
Despite their eliminations, both contestants left the kitchen proud of what they had achieved. Sarah said the challenge pushed her creativity and patience to new levels, showing her she could accomplish more than she thought. Joy credited her grandmother and mother for inspiring her love of cooking, and noted that the experience helped her grow by experimenting with new dishes while learning from the judges’ feedback.
Although their time on the show has ended, Sarah and Joy’s energy, creativity, and love for food continue to shine. The remaining contestants now face higher stakes as they compete for the title of Taste Master Junior Season 2 champion.
New episodes air every Tuesday at 7:30pm on SABC2, with repeats on Wednesday at 1pm and Sunday at 4pm, brought to viewers by Clover.
