Heritage Day Recipe: the mighty Braai Pie

With heritage day coming up we can think of many South African traditional comfort foods to celebrate our heritage with. In true South Africa style, we do things differently and dubbed this day ‘Braai day’. So, in keeping with this integral part of our heritage, for the perfect recipe to compliment your braai, we suggest a Braai-pie.

For those who have never heard of a Braai-pie before, be prepared to be amazed. You don’t need to find the perfect garlic bread variation. And gone are the traditional ‘braai broodjie’, with cut-off corners for those who don’t like onion or tomato (lol).

Here’s what you’ll need:
2 x rolls puff pastry, thawed
1 x cooked & seasoned chicken breast, shredded
250g cooked bacon bits
1 small onion, chopped & fried
1 teaspoon of garlic
200g of mushrooms (optional), chopped and sauteed
Sauce of choice (spicy mayo is a good option)
Grated cheese (however much you please)

Instructions:
Make sure to grease the braai grill.
On the opened grill, lay down your first roll of puff pastry. There’s no need to roll it out thinner.
Layer your ingredients in the order you prefer.
Remember to leave about 2cm of space around the sides to seal it later.
(hint: cheese can go on the bottom and the top)

Two things to keep in mind:
Don’t overdo it with the sauce and dont overfill the pie.

Now, place the second roll of puff pastry on top and seal the sides with a fork.
Close the grid without pinching the pie too much to avoid cutting the dough

Your pie is now ready for the braai. Make sure to turn the grid constantly. When all the dough is cooked through and the cheese is melted, it is done!

Maybe this will be a new tradition for you too. Just another way to celebrate our wonderful country.
