Following the loss of two lives in attacks on foreign nationals in Durban last week, Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Lindiwe Sisulu will address African ambassadors on Monday.
Foreign-owned shops were the targets of violence that resulted in foreign nationals having to seek refuge. Sisulu urged police officials to react with haste and deal with the perpetrators.
The minister also urged citizens to take a stand against the violence to ensure that the horrific scenes of past xenophobic attacks in South Africa would not be repeated.
The worst acts of xenophobia in the country were seen in 2008 and 2015. 11 years ago 67 people were killed, and about seven lives were lost in 2015.
Sisulu’s meeting with African ambassadors is to strategize methods of supporting communities and promoting integration.
