France = Champions
The French squad went from being pre-tournament outsiders to champions of the world for the second time since 1998. We got to see the rise of teenage sensation Kylian Mbappe. Antoine Griezmann and Paul Pogba are not to be forgotten as they too rose to the occasion.
Unbelievable Success of Croatia
Second place is no small feat for this small nation which less than 50 years ago was in a state of civil war. Their first world cup qualification was in 1998 and Sunday’s match marked their first finals. Surely Luka Modric must be in consideration for the Ballon D’Or after guiding Real Madrid to Champions League success and leading Croatia to the final of the World Cup.
Africa Fails Again
No African team went beyond the group stages, despite there being so much African talent competing in the top leagues across Europe. Unfortunately, this has still not translated into international success.
Rebirth of English Football
It feels like this tournament has breathed new life into the English squad’s spirit of football. The future looks rather bright for them. One would hope to see the same spirit in the next World Cup.
Best World Cup Ever?
Was this the best World Cup Ever? If so, was it because all the favourites failed and the dark horses shone?
Leagues start in a Month’s Time
The players will have minimal rest time as the next cycle of leagues and qualifiers begin in just two weeks’ time.
