Cape Town’s Greenmarket Square set for a full day of music, dance, food, and community on 16 December 2025

This December, Greenmarket Square will transform into the city’s ultimate festive playground as Unity On The Square (UOTS) celebrates its fifth anniversary with a special tribute to Loukmaan Adams, one of the Mother City’s most iconic performers, who turned 50 this past September.

When news of Loukmaan’s milestone spread, fans called for a birthday show. But he and his wife and business partner, Shaakirah Adams, felt the best way to celebrate was to bring the celebration to the people of Cape Town creating a day that fuses music, culture, and community in a way only UOTS can.

“Reaching 50 years and reflecting on over four decades in the arts, it’s amazing to see young talent, women, and communities sharing the stage, telling their stories, and creating opportunities,” says Loukmaan Adams.

Founded in 2021, Unity On The Square has become Cape Town’s premier urban cultural celebration, a space where families gather, artists perform, and the city comes together to celebrate its creativity. In just five years, the event has grown into a must-attend fixture on the festive calendar, drawing audiences eager to experience the city’s rich artistic energy in a safe, inclusive, and vibrant environment.

This year’s edition promises a powerhouse line-up of performers who have inspired, collaborated with, and journeyed alongside Loukmaan throughout his career. Expect soulful singers, electrifying dancers, live bands, and cultural showcases each performance handpicked to reflect the rhythm, passion, and flair that define Loukmaan’s creative world.

Adding to the experience, local food trucks will offer a variety of flavors, ensuring that every guest can enjoy the perfect combination of music, culture, and cuisine. From Cape Town classics to international treats, the food is as much a part of the celebration as the stage performances.

JP Smith, Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, says: “The City of Cape Town has been a proud supporter of Unity on the Square over the last four years, as a platform that not only provides a stage for local entertainers and entrepreneurs to make a living but also plays a role in promoting unity. Since 2021, Unity on the Square has been on the rise and proving to be a must attend event in commemoration of the Day of Reconciliation. This year is even more special with the celebration of Loukmaan Adams, and the City of Cape Town is thrilled to join thousands in honouring a Cape Town icon who has entertained us for over 40 years.”

Beyond entertainment, Unity On The Square has become a platform for opportunity. In 2024 alone, the event created 305 jobs for performers, crew, vendors, and support staff, nurturing emerging talent and strengthening Cape Town’s arts economy.

“Unity On The Square is more than a concert,” says Shaakirah Adams, project director. “It’s a celebration of community and creativity. Every year, we see lives change whether it’s a young performer getting their first paid gig, a vendor growing their business, or families enjoying a safe and unforgettable day together.”

Held at Greenmarket Square, the event carries a powerful sense of history and place. During Unity On The Square, this space is transforms into a stage celebrating freedom, diversity, and resilience, showcasing the city’s journey and the power of cultural unity.
