MTBS, one of the largest inter-school athletics competitions in the Western Cape, is an annual highlight for local schools. The name MTBS is derived from the names of the four participating schools: D.F. Malan High School, Tygerberg High School, Bellville High School, and Stellenberg High School, in that order. Each year, these schools come together for a highly anticipated event that celebrates both athleticism and school spirit.
A key feature of the event is the Flashes—a vibrant war cry ceremony that kicks off the day’s activities. During this performance, students create a “human LCD screen” in the stands by opening and closing their school blazers in precise, pre-determined moments, allowing images and animations to be displayed. The synchronization and creativity behind the Flashes performance make it a captivating spectacle, showcasing the unity and enthusiasm of the learners.
The MTBS event took place on February 8th, with the Flashes held at DHL Stadium and the athletics competition at Greenpoint Stadium. This year, Hoërskool Stellenberg emerged as the winner of both the Flashes and athletics competitions. Additionally, Hoërskool D.F. Malan was awarded the title of best gees (spirit) for their outstanding energy throughout the event.
STADIO, the JSE-listed higher education provider and sponsor of the 2025 MTBS Flashes and Athletics competition, congratulated the winners and praised the event for its vibrant atmosphere and its embodiment of unity and competition. STADIO CEO Chris Vorster commented, “MTBS Flashes is a highlight on school calendars – and even for members of the local community who are not directly involved with the schools. It’s little wonder – the atmosphere in the stadium is always electric, and every year spectators are wowed by the creativity and precision of the cheers on display.”
