Saudi Film Nights made its first South African presentation this October, inviting audiences in Cape Town to discover a selection of contemporary Saudi on 14 October 2026. Presented in South Africa by the Joburg Film Festival (JFF) on behalf of the Saudi Film Commission, the programme brought together two feature films and two shorts with post-screening Q&As giving audiences the opportunity to engage directly with attending Saudi filmmakers.
The films moved between dark humour, family drama and intimate social observation, showcasing the range of creative voices and perspectives shaping contemporary Saudi cinema. Night Courier followed Fahad, a struggling delivery driver navigating Riyadh after dark, whose urgent need for money drew him into a dangerous illicit world. Irtizaz offered a sharp, playful take on the pressures of marriage, as a young divorcee attending a funeral was pushed by her mother into an awkward contest for approval. Inspired by true events, Siwar told the story of a Saudi and a Turkish family whose lives were upended when DNA tests revealed that their children had accidentally been switched at birth. First Funeral Day presented an intimate drama about an estranged father who returned to his former home following the death of his child, forcing a family to confront grief, distance and long-held truths.
“There is no single way into a country’s cinema, and that is what makes Saudi Film Nights exciting: these four films offer very different stories and points of view. JFF is committed to bringing distinctive international cinema into conversation with South African audiences and filmmakers, and we are honoured to collaborate with the Saudi Film Commission on its first South African presentation and to deepen creative relationships between our film communities,” said Taryn Joffe, Festival Manager, Joburg Film Festival.
Beyond the screenings, the South African presentation brought Saudi and South African filmmakers, audiences and industry communities together, creating greater understanding of their respective filmmaking cultures and opening new possibilities for professional collaboration. The programme also provided an opportunity to strengthen relationships between the Saudi and South African film communities.
As Saudi cinema continues to expand its international presence, Saudi Film Nights gave South African audiences an opportunity to experience the breadth of contemporary Saudi filmmaking while creating new connections between filmmakers and industry communities across both countries.
