Namibia bids farewell to Dr. Sam Shafiishuna Nujoma, its founding father and liberation hero. He passed away on February 8, 2025, at 95, but his legacy of resilience, unity, and vision remains.
From the moment his death was announced, the nation entered a period of mourning, with flags at half-mast. His state funeral on February 22, 2025, saw thousands gather in Windhoek to pay their final respects as he was laid to rest at Heroes’ Acre. Citizens waved flags, sang hymns, and honoured the leader who secured their freedom.
Born in 1929, Nujoma rose from humble beginnings to lead Namibia’s liberation struggle. Founding SWAPO in 1960, he spearheaded the fight against colonial rule, spending decades in exile rallying global support. His efforts led to Namibia’s independence on March 21, 1990.
For many Namibians, especially those who lived through the liberation struggle, his passing was deeply personal. David, a young student of education awaiting his qualification, reflected on the generational impact of Nujoma’s life.
I can quite relate to what every other Namibian is going through, especially those that understand the role that Sam Nujoma played in the liberation struggle of Namibia. I think the elderly age group is more affected because they have an iron connection with him and all the important moments leading towards our independence. If I had my grandmother beside me right now, I could possibly mimic what she’s feeling at the moment.”
Nujoma championed reconciliation, education, and economic progress. His leadership established Namibia as a peaceful, thriving nation.
The best way to pay homage to Sam Nujoma today is to live up to the expectations he had for the Namibian nation. If he preached about solidarity and unity among our people, then that is exactly what we should practice moving forward. He had a dream for Namibia, and the only way to honor that dream is to fulfill it. He is gone now, so it is up to us to ensure that a brighter Namibia shines through his legacy. We are the future generation, and our future should reflect the efforts of the past.”
As Namibia mourns, it also celebrates his life—ensuring his dream of a strong, united nation lives on.
