Under the leafy canopies of the prestigious Inanda Polo Club in Sandton, Johannesburg, women gathered on November 16, 2024, for an inspiring high tea fundraiser in support of Girl Unlimited, a non-profit organisation dedicated to empowering black girls from disadvantaged backgrounds. The event, themed “Support Her, Know Her Name,” celebrated resilience, opportunity, and solidarity.

Tinhiko Nkuna, Deputy Dean of the African Leadership Academy, delivered a compelling keynote address, urging continuous support for young women. “Today’s theme, ‘Support Her, Say Her Name,’ may sound simple, but it is profound,” she reminded the audience, emphasizing the lasting impact of supportive communities on young women’s futures.

Portia Nkuna, co-founder of Girl Unlimited, shared the program’s mission to equip girls with essential life skills. “Our goal is to empower these young women through soft skills, psycho-social support, academic guidance, and mentorship in STEM, critical thinking, and public speaking,” she explained. “Every second Saturday, these girls come together to prepare not only for university but for life’s challenges.”

The event introduced attendees to mentees who confidently shared how Girl Unlimited had shaped their lives. Founders Portia Nkuna and Bathetshi Matenge also reflected on their journeys from modest beginnings to successful careers, highlighting their passion for uplifting girls with similar stories.
