Global animal welfare organisation FOUR PAWS is encouraging South Africans to celebrate Valentine’s Day in a meaningful way by symbolically adopting a rescued big cat, supporting the long-term care of animals rescued from abuse, exploitation, and inappropriate captivity.
Fiona Miles, Director of FOUR PAWS South Africa, says the initiative offers an alternative to traditional Valentine’s gifting. “Valentine’s Day is about love, and what better way to show it than by helping animals who have endured so much,” she says. “Every symbolic adoption contributes to food, medical care and sanctuary for these remarkable animals, creating an impact that lasts far beyond a single day.”
The campaign allows supporters to symbolically adopt big cats, with each adoption including a personalised certificate and updates from LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary in the Free State. Other gifting options include donations made in a loved one’s name and eco-friendly merchandise that supports animal welfare initiatives.
Many of the animals cared for by FOUR PAWS were rescued from zoos, circuses, or private ownership and now live in protected environments at accredited sanctuaries, where they receive ongoing care and rehabilitation support.
By choosing a symbolic adoption, supporters contribute to long-term animal welfare funding while giving a gift rooted in compassion, sustainability, and ubuntu.
